Here, once again comes Christmas and the Damanenses in Macau celebrate reminiscing the Damão style Christmas, with festive sweets and food. Damanenses sang our traditional 'Louvado' - em frente do presépio', which means 'praises to baby Jesus' infront of the crib. (Sung ex-tempo, without any practice- December 2008)

Damão at the Lusofonia 2008 in Macau

Once again this year Damão was projected at the Festival da Lusofonia 2008 through the 'Núcleo de Animação Cultural de Goa Damão e Diu (NACGDD)' .
Tuna Goesa made their first stage appearance on 4th November at 'Largo de Senado' in Macau as part of their Macau tour performance for the 'Festival da Lusofonia 2008'. This was only a promotional stage performance at the city center of Macau.
Goan Fadista, Sonia Shirsat did not disappoint anyone. In fact, along with Trio Orlando, she certainly impressed Macau and kept the audience and passers-by amazed. After having shown the Portuguese on the Portuguese stage in Portugal, she's left her mark and exceptional voice echoing in Macau. At the preliminary promotional itself, with her nightingale voice and her natural style, Sonia has shown Macau that Goa possesses world class singers and musicians.


Convivio, Goa Damão e Diu, Amigos e Simpatizantes'

A dinner - 'Convivio, Goa Damão e Diu, Amigos e Simpatizantes', was hosted by 'Núcleo de Animação Cultural de Goa Damão e Diu (NACGDD)' at the Ocean Club in Taipa on 5th November 2008. Apart from other food, dishes like Sarapatel de Damão, Vinho de Alho, Barrada de Camarão and Xacuti de Galinha was prepared,. The dinner was in honour of the visiting group 'Tuna Goesa' as well as members of all the Portuguese speaking countries of Macau and friends of Goa Damão e Diu. The President Jose Colaço welcomed all present. Tuna Goesa with the sensational Sónia Shirsat sang a Portuguese and a Konkanni song to delight the guests. Finally like in the traditional way all joined in singing and dancing - matando saudades da nossa terra.

TUNA GOESA AT LUSOFONIA 2008

Tuna Goesa showcased themselves and displayed Goa's talent on the 7th of November at Largo de Nossa Senhor do Carmo where they shared the stage with groups from all the Portuguese speaking countries such as Macau, Angola, Timor Leste, Moçambique, Portugal, Cabo Verde, Brazil, São Tomé e Princípe and Guiné Bissau.
Goa's dancing group Alegria lead by Messais Tavares known for organizing the Goan carnival floats also enchanted Macau with their dances – 'the Kunbi Dance', 'the Cotti Dance','the Mando' and 'the Dekhni'.
Tuna Goesa comprising of Sonia Shirsat, Orlando de Noronha, Sidarth Cota, Sancho Menezes along with Messias Tavares, Scalat Martins, Celina Xavier and Shawn Tavares overwhelmed the people of Macau as well as tourists with their music and dances.
Undoubtedly, Tuna Goesa overwhelmed the crowd and made the Goa Damão and Diu community in Macau proud. Cheers to Tuna Goesa! Long Live the voice of Sonia Shirsat !


GRUPO DE DANCES E CANTARES DE GOA, DAMAO E DIU - LUSOFONIA 2008

Grupo de Dances e Cantares de Goa Damão e Diu accompanied with muscians all the way from Goa, 'Trio Orlando', with their professional and talented music, sang while Grupo Alegria danced the Dekhni at the Goa Damão e Diu pavilion. The VIP and visitors danced with us too.

Grupo de Dances e Cantares de Goa Damão e Diu performed on the Lusofonia Carmo stage with songs like Goa, Goa, Goa...., Marcha de Fontainhas and Rapsódia de Damão, accompanied by muscians all the way from Goa 'Trio Orlando', with their professional and talented music.
The group also went to each participating country pavilion serenading Goa Damão e Diu songs and dancing where all joined, which was widely acclaimed.


NACGDD HONOURS ST. ANA ALFONSO DE IMMACULADA CONCEIÇÃO
The Goa Damão e Diu community offered a mass in honour of Saint Ana Alfonsa de Immaculada Conceição, the Indian Saint who was canonized on 12th October 2008 at the Vatican by Pope Benedict XVI and also to pray for the persecution of the Catholics in India.

Yet on another note, the Goa Damão e Diu community in Macau under “Núcleo de Animação Cultural de Goa Damão e Diu (NACGDD)” is proud to announce that once again this year we have shown our supremacy in the midst of the giant countries like Macau, Angola, Timor Leste, Moçambique, Portugal, Cabo Verde, Brazil, São Tomé e Princípe and Guiné Bissau and won the first prize for our Goa Damão e Diu display this year too - be it in the production of its replica, that was “Farol de Forte Aguada” under the theme 'Memoria de Uma Cultura'; its interior display with different attires, spices, arts and crafts; cultural programme at the Goa Damão e Diu pavillion; and the sumptuous Goa Damão e Diu delicacies.

A dinner was offered to all participating countries and dignitaries by the organizers of the Festival da Lusofonia on 12th November 2008, at the Macau Tower. Amongst countries like Macau, Angola, Timor Leste, Moçambique, Portugal, Cabo Verde, Brazil, São Tomé e Princípe and Guiné Bissau, Goa Damão e Diu pavilion was once again declared the winner as the best performing country for the production of its replica, 'Farol de Forte Aguada', under the theme 'Memoria de Uma Cultura' - its interior display with different attires, spices, arts and crafts - cultural programme at the pavillion and the sumptuous Goa Damão e Diu delicacies.

A prayer for Goa Damão and Diu

With sincere desire to be and feel the togetherness with the Damanenses all over the world, celebrating WORLD DAMÃO DAY, a mass was offered by Oscar Noruega and family this evening, the 20th of August 2008 at the Sé Cathedral Macau, for the people of Goa, Damão and Diu.

Hope Damão can acheive all round development and prosperity and grow in love, peace, unity and happiness forever.

All Damanenses sang, as the celebrations commemorating the 400 years of the Church of Our Lady of Remedios curtain dropped

As the curtain of the year long celebrations commemorating the 400 years of the Church of Our Lady of Remedios dropped, Bishop Godfrey de Rosario gave his blessings to the people of Damão at the end of a mass on 30th of December 2007, at the open air altar of Christ the King.

After the high mass, culminating the celebrations, at the foot of Christ the King, all Damanenses sang,

A thrilling theatrical act in our Damão Portugues was wonderfully enacted by our Damão folks to the laughter and amazement of hundreds present. Indeed remarkable.
The script and the voice of the ‘sobrinho’ is a fine piece of art from Francisco Machado (Babushinho), and the voice of the three ‘Titi’ was from Odette Remedios Machado, Noemia Machado da Costa and Lina (Fifi) Mendonça e Machado´, who also played the wife.
The three Titi’s were Antonio Luis -Titi Goonglu, Fremiot Mendonça - Titi Donglu, João - Titi Maru and the man who stole the show was the ´sobrinho´ António Jesus.
CONGRATALUTIONS!!!!! to the cast, voice, singers, writer and producer.

Singing the Louvado with family and friends in Damão brought back memories of the past. It was special, singing in Damão, with our Damão folk-family and friends, things we the Damão diaspora haven't done for years.

Mass and the X'mas revelry

A packed crowd celebrated the birth of Jesus. With Christmas mood in the air, after the mass, friends and families hugged one another, as this is an occassion where you meet Damanenses from all over the world, you haven't seen over the years.

Although it’s quiet, Christmas in Damão is special for Damanenses.

X'mas 2007 – Midnight mass

The first open-air Christmas mass was celebrated at the newly built Chapel of Christ the King altar, constructed in commemoration of the 400 years of the Church of Our Lady of Remedios.

Imposing replicas

Our imposing replicas of the monuments, our culture and food surprises many at this end of the world. Tourists take keen interest in knowing more about our little known Damão.
A great deal of effort, time and sleepless nights goes into putting up these monuments, which are seen and acclaimed by the other participating countries, dignitaries and the public at large. Below is a replica of Diu Fort.

Lusofonia 2007 was for the Damão children to show that young as they are and although born in Macau, they can still sing our Damão folklore.

Instilling the culture at a tender age

At a tender age the Damaneses are instilling their culture in themselves, dancing to a konkanni song.

The VIPs from the Macau government and the visiting dignitaries from Portugal, Dr. Antonio Costa the Mayor of Lisboa, Macau’s Secretary for Justice and Administration, Florinda Chan (holding the book) and hundreds of people visited the stall of Goa Damão and Diu, and they were greeted with Ai Luzi, Luzi mi Luzi…..alegre na entrada e triste na saída. The guests were also treated with our delicacies.
This event takes place every year and Damão culture and heritage is thus widely projected.

The last Portuguese Governor of Macau and his wife visit the stall of Damão. He takes keen interest in the things around, especially the raladora do côco, as he is familiar with it. This display was on 24th of June 1999, which was Dia de Cidade and also coincided with Saõ João. This used to be a holiday in Macau, but not any more.

Integration of Damanenses into Macau

Though a very closed society yet as the pictures show Damaneneses are very much integrated in the Macau society.
Pictures show Damanenses in Grupo de Danças e Cantares de Macau, a Portuguese folklore group and in the Macanese Dóci Papiaçám di Macau.
Macanese too have a dialect called Patua, which has some similarity to our Damão dialect. This dialect has almost disappeared and this group is now trying to revive it.

This is the first time a Damanense was selected to sing the ‘Veronica’ at the annual procession of Nosso Senhor dos Passos as this is mainly reserved for the Macanese.

On the sports arena, Damanense have been selected to represent the Macau Football squad at International levels.

Our ancestors in Damão gathered with neighbours, family and friends infront of the crib to sing to baby Jesus, what we call the Louvado.
It's a celebration of Christmas the Damão way, with food and Christmas sweets. Trying to recollect and preserve some of the songs, most of our Damanenses can recall singing in the past, but may have long forgotten (excuse the video clip as the songs are not reahearsed).
Here is the 2005 Christmas edition of our Louvado on the 28th of December with the Damanenses and friends of Damão in Macau.

A replica of the Gate of São Jerónimo

A prize winning replica - Gate of São Jeronimo showcased during the Festa de Lusofonia 2004. The different replicas constructed every year are the conception, design, fabrication and execution of Francisco Lopes (Chiquinho) assisted by Oscar Noruega and other community members.
The interior display and ornamentation is by Henriqueta Colaço, Olinda Amaral and others. Damão food is the art of Maria Antónia Colaço and Violeta Britto.
Cultural performance is organized by Jack Colaço, Charlot Noruega, Athos Fernandes and Emalita Rocha with the help of the group members mentioned in other clips.
Other countries participating are Angola, Mozambique, Cabe Verde, Macau, Brazil, Portugal, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe and Goa Damão e Diu.

Goa Damão and Diu once again echoing to commemorate Dia de Camões in 2002

Performance on 10th of June 2002, once again with the popular songs of Goa Damão and Diu echoing in the air to commemorate Dia de Camões, Comunidades e de Portugal.

O Divan (from Diu) and Barra de Damão Alumãe. The songs are the same but the music, style, rhythm……. . The more we listen the more we instill them in our hearts and minds.

Damão at the Dia de Camões, Comunidades, e de Portugal

A classical performance led by late Futunate Figueiredo was showcast on 9th of June 2000 at 'Centro Cultural de Macau' by the 'Grupo de Danças e Cantares de Goa Damão e Diu', at the invitation of the 1st Portuguese Consulate General in Macau, after Macau's Handover to China on 20th December 1999.

Various other artists and groups participated in the presence of dignitaries from Portugal and Macau and a packed audience.

Damaneses all the way from Damão perform in Macau

In 1989, a group all the way from Damão performed in Macau. Here are some of the atires of the old times and some we still see in Damão. Catholic, Hindus, Muslims, Parsis are all very prominent.

Fr. Lancelot who has always graced our eucharistic celebration joins the Damaneses sing song with his jolly spirit at a dinner of the Festa da Nossas Senhora das Candeias.

Our Damaõ food and traditional BATUCAD….

The BATUCAD continues in 2008 alongwith Goans, Macanese and Portuguese who savour the delicious Damão specialities like Bulinhas de mantiega, dampac de galinha, barrada de peixe, fritada de galinha, bruta de brinjela, ambotic de porco, bhaji de batata, feijoada, refogada de arroz, carne assada and apas and other food. People's mouths were sweetened with bebinca, pudim dos ovos, chacha de batata doce and a variety of other desserts.

Invitees look forward to return to our celebration the following year not only for our delicious food but also to enjoy our batucad.

2nd Febrauary 2007.
After the mass, the Damanenses along with our Goa and Diu folks and our invitees, feast on our Damão delicacies. This delicious and mouth watering food prepared by experienced and traditional hands, with a variety of dishes is laid once a year on the table. Truly speaking, no one feels shy, not even our invitees. And in the end everyone admits, "Can't afford to feel shy, the food is lovely".

And have you forgotten this word BATUCAD......., even in Damão its hard to hear, its being replaced with the MUSICAD from the DJ.
Damão!!!! Enjoy the DJ music. But at the same time, have our BATUCAD..... too.

Celebrating the mass for Damão

Fr. Lancelot Rodrigues who is a well known figure in Macau for his service to the refugees from different countries among other charity services, runs the Catholic Community Center in Macau. He along with Fr. Albino Pais and Fr. Urbano Fernandes has been celebrating the Mass for the Festa de Nossa Senhora das Candeias on 2nd. of February for several consecutive years.
